Tea most likely originated in China, where is spread to the rest of the world via the Silk Road. The earliest written records of tea date as early as 10th century BC. Almost every culture in the world consumes tea, and with it's myriad of health benefits, it's no wonder this beverage is so popular! Tea is known to have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, and may help suppress pain and nausea. Green tea in particular may help lower the risk of stroke, osteoporosis, and cognitive impairment in the elderly. Tea can also promote a state of focused alertness, while enhancing a sense of serenity.

The leaves from this bush become black as they oxidise, giving the tea it's characteristic color. Black tea tends to be higher in caffeine than other types of teas, making it an excellent moring drink when you need to feel more awake and alert. There are studies which have shown that the antioxidants in black tea, such as polyphenols and catechins, may help prevent some types of cancer, reduce atherosclerosis, and the risk of heart attacks. Green tea, just like black tea, is made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush. These leaves, though, are not allowed to oxidize, leaving green tea with a higher content of antioxidants. Antioxidants fight free radicals in the body, which are damaging compounds which affect DNA, alter cells, and even cause cells to die. Free radicals are likely involved in the aging process, and related to other health issues such as cancer and heart disease. Green tea may also be helpful for those living with IBS, diabetes, liver disease, or those trying to lose weight.
Rooibos tea comes from Aspalathus linearis, which only grows in South Africa. The leaves from this bush oxidize, giving the tea its vibrant earthy red color. Unlike black and green tea, rooibos tea is naturally caffeine-free, while still containing large amounts of antioxidants. These antioxidants have powerful cancer-fighting properties. The lower levels of tannins in this tea, as opposed to black or green tea, can help alleviate the stomach upset some people experience from black teas. Rooibos gives all the positive effects of consuming antioxidants without feeling wired or disturbing sleep. People commonly drink Rooibos tea with milk and honey, and sometimes lemon.
Documents have been recovered dating back to Ancient Egypt and Ancient China that refer to people enjoying the many uses of herbal tea. In addition to great taste, some of the benefits cited for daily herbal tea consumption include its value as an antioxidant and energy booster, immune enhancement properties, ability to calm the mind and assist in relaxation, ability to improve circulation and tone up the heart and its anti-arthritic properties. In the March 2011 issue of Agricultural Research magazine, recent U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded research at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston, provided evidence of bioactivity in peppermint tea. In test tubes, peppermint has been found to have significant antimicrobial and antiviral activities, strong antioxidant and antitumor actions, and antiallergenic potential.
Hibiscus tea, brewed from the hibiscus flower, has been shown to help reduce blood pressure, amongst other things. Based on a human clinical trial, the team also reported drinking hibiscus tea lowered blood pressure in a group of pre-hypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults. In a related 2008 USDA study, scientists found that consuming three cups of hibiscus tea daily resulted in an average drop of 8.1 points in their systolic blood pressure, compared to a 1.3 point drop in the volunteers who drank the placebo beverage. Study participants with higher pressure readings (129 or above) had a greater response to hibiscus tea: their systolic blood pressure went down by 13.2 points. In a 2010 research review from Phytomedicine, scientists sized up four clinical trials on the use of hibiscus tea in treatment of high blood pressure and determined hibiscus may help lower blood pressure. In another compelling 2009 study from the Journal of Human Hypertension, scientists discovered that daily consumption of hibiscus tea may help lower blood pressure in people with Type 2 Diabetes. In a 2009 study from the Journal of Alternative and Complimentary Medicine, researchers assigned 60 diabetic patients to drink hibiscus tea or black tea twice daily for a month. Of the 53 people who completed the study, the study’s authors found that members of the hibiscus group had a significant increase in HDL (good cholesterol) and a significant decrease in total cholesterol and LDL (bad cholesterol).
