Why Should You Drink Melatonin Tea?

Let's face it — 21st-century life is not well-suited for getting a good night's sleep. Our fast-paced world is only getting faster, and our bodies are struggling to keep up. Add in a hyper-competitive business environment, ever-updating social media streams, and demanding work schedules, and you have the recipe for a significantly sleep-deprived world.

In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35% of Americans do not get the recommended 7 hours or more of sleep every night. That's over a third of the country facing each day with droopy eyes and foggy minds.

At Seelect Tea, we believe that rest is not a luxury — it's a cornerstone of whole-life wellness. For generations, we have turned to the healing power of herbs and botanicals to support the body's natural rhythms. In search of sounder sleep, many have found that melatonin tea can be a gentle and meaningful step toward more restful nights.

What is melatonin?

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the body via the pineal gland. Its production revolves — no pun intended — around the sun. As the day winds down and darkness sets in, your body gradually increases its melatonin production, signaling that it's time to rest. At dawn, light cues your body to reduce melatonin and begin the day.

For many, however, insomnia caused by shift-work disorder, jet lag, delayed sleep phase syndrome, or other conditions can disrupt this finely tuned cycle. Melatonin is crucial to normalizing sleep because it helps maintain your circadian rhythm — your internal clock — so that your body can stay on a regular sleep and wake schedule.

What are the benefits of melatonin?

Research into melatonin has found that it may offer a number of positive effects, including helping you fall asleep faster, allowing you to sleep more soundly, supporting cardiovascular health, and offering anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties.

How do I use melatonin tea?

Melatonin tea works similarly to other oral melatonin supplements, but with an added benefit that we at Seelect Tea have always appreciated — the warmth and ritual of brewing and drinking a cup of tea creates a calming atmosphere that naturally sets the tone for relaxation and sleep. Melatonin tea bags often contain low doses of melatonin, which are a recommended starting point when taking melatonin for the first time. To prepare your cup, simply boil one cup of water, steep your melatonin tea bag for 4 to 6 minutes, and drink it between 30 and 120 minutes before bed.

Are there any side effects of melatonin?

Low-dose, short-term use of melatonin is generally considered safe, though some may experience mild side effects such as headaches, dizziness, sleepiness, stomach cramps, or irritability.

Melatonin tea is not recommended for children. Please also consult your physician before use if you are pregnant, taking prescription medications such as blood thinners, diabetes medication, birth control pills, or immunosuppressants, or if you have high blood pressure or diabetes. As with any wellness supplement, we always encourage you to use melatonin responsibly and under the guidance of your primary care physician.
